Legal Services

The CMM in-house legal council assists The CMM in understanding, and meeting their legal responsibilities. This includes providing ongoing legal advice to The CMM Executive Director and the Senior Management Team in regards to the following:

  • Employment and personnel issues

  • Occupational Health and Safety

  • Policy Development

  • Maintaining and filing statements with the Register of Joint Stock Companies

  • Legal Contracts

Within The CMM, Legal Services also works in conjunction with the Land Claims Research Unit. Once claims are researched, The CMM's legal advisor conducts a legal analysis of the claim before it is presented to Chief and Council.

At the community level, the Legal Advisor provides information and education on Wills and Estate planning. The CMM distributes the "Mi'kmaq Wills Package: For Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq" as requested.

The CMM also offers services to legal cases involving the recognition of treaty rights and aboriginal title on behalf of the Mi'kmaw Nation as a collective.
