Environmental Services
The
Mission of Mi'kmaq Environmental Services is to support the mandate and activities
of the Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq in its member communities by building
Mi'kmaw expertise in environmental management. MES has provided environmental
services in The CMM communities since 1999 and continues to provide professional
advice and advocacy for environmental or land development concerns of The
CMM's member First Nations.
MES also conducts Mi'kmaq Knowledge Studies (MKS). A MKS is a study of historic and current Mi'kmaq land and resource use. An evaluation is completed to determine any impacts a potential project may have on the use of that land. Information obtained from personal interviews and land mapping aids in protection and management of areas of Mi'kmaq interest. Such areas include traditional hunting and harvesting areas in Nova Scotia.
The Mi'kmaq Environmental Services program is an active partner with Atlantic First Nation Environmental Network in an effort to protect and preserve the environment.
Atlantic First Nation Environmental Network (AFNEN) At present The CMM administers the AFNEN. A planning committee comprised of representatives from each First Nation organization coordinates the activities of the AFNEN. To become a member please visit www.afnen.ca
